A Durational Performance Munich 2022
“Today, we turn to one person to provide what an entire village once did: a sense of grounding, meaning, and continuity. At the same time, we expect our committed relationships to be romantic as well as emotionally and sexually fulfilling. Is it any wonder that so many relationships crumble under the weight of it all?” Esther Perel
4x4 meters - a box.
2 performers - one couple.
"Relationshifts" explores the different phases and dynamics of a relationship in a limited space through dance. From the romantic-enthusiastic beginning, to the shared space and the feeling of deep grounding and connectedness, to phases of longing for autonomy, the desire to break out of familiar paths, to leave obligations behind. Also included in the relationship package: betrayal, anger, longing, intimacy, compassion, sex, boredom, surrender and... love. "Relationshifts" takes all these big words that are part of our everyday life together as a couple and declines through the emotional and physical aspects of a relationship in different life situations. The starting point is very personal stories of the artistic team; which the performance translates into global images, using choreography and music as a language in which the audience can discover everyday moments.
The personal stories and relationship experiences of the artists flow into the rehearsal process. In addition, an endless field of research, in which novels, poetry, films and songs are consulted. “Relationshifts" weaves all these different inputs together and translates them into the choreographic image of a relationship in which the audience can also discover its everyday moments.
"Relationshifts" takes place as a one-hour loop four times each evening. The audience is invited to watch one or more repetitions; in the same space, with the same choreographic structure, the protagonists start again. But are they the same? Do they follow the same paths? Do they repeat the same patterns?
Or do they change, age, lose control, give up and start again.
